How the Gross-Net Calculator Works

Enter your gross salary, your canton of residence and your municipality. The calculator automatically computes all mandatory deductions under Swiss law — AHV/IV/EO, ALV, non-occupational accident insurance (NBUV) and BVG pension contributions — and shows your net salary instantly. Income tax is calculated separately in the Tax Calculator, so you can understand both types of deductions separately.

Which Deductions Are Calculated? (2026)

In Switzerland, the following social insurance contributions are deducted from gross salary (employee share, as of 2026):

DeductionRate (employee)
AHV / IV / EO5.3 %
ALV (Arbeitslosenversicherung)1.1 %
NBUV (Nichtberufsunfall)~0.4 %
BVG (Pensionskasse, Minimalplan)variable

BVG contributions vary by pension fund, age and coordinated salary. The calculation uses standard rates according to the BVG minimum plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Gross-Net Calculator

What is the difference between gross and net salary?

Gross salary is the contractually agreed salary before any deductions. Net salary is the money that arrives in your bank account — after deduction of AHV/IV/EO (5.3%), ALV (1.1%), NBUV and BVG. Income tax comes afterwards and depends heavily on your canton of residence.

Why does net salary differ by canton?

Social insurance deductions (AHV, ALV, NBUV) are identical across Switzerland. The biggest difference comes from income tax: two employees with an identical gross salary of CHF 80,000 can keep CHF 5,000–15,000 more or less per year depending on the canton. Use the cantonal comparison for your personal difference.

What does a 13th monthly salary mean for taxes?

A 13th monthly salary increases your annual income and thus potentially the tax progression. For the calculation, always enter the annual gross salary including the 13th month (monthly salary × 13).

Are self-employed people treated differently than employees?

Self-employed persons pay the full AHV rate (10.6%) without employer contribution. BVG contributions are voluntary, NBUV does not apply. Activate the 'Self-employed' toggle in the calculator to get the correct rates.
